I have done donations before and I have visited the schools built by donations in the mountains and the places that are poor and the places that need help. This time I joined a group of people that were lead by Kevin Xiao’s mom and dad, this trip it was different.

Tianzige elementary school located in guizhou in the mountains where people make their living off of farming for small amounts of money. In the mountains where tianzege is, the people who live there has to work for their small amounts of money and if the students are not in school they are helping to do farm work. I went to guiyang to help with donations and to visit people’s houses to see if they are the right people to donate to. For the first two days we visited peoples’s houses and on the last day we visited tianzige elementary school.

For the first two days we went to visit people’s houses and to see their family conditions. The families that we visited all had many problems but they often have the same problems, for all of the families they have economical issues, most of them cannot earn enough money for their education and to support their family and taxes.

We stopped multiple times and the driver stepped out “Im going to ask for directions” and after a few minutes he came back and we continued driving. We sat in the car waiting and talking. I was talking to Kevin on the car ride about games while the adults were talking about to the local people for directions. Sometimes it takes up to 2 hours to get to their houses if we can actually find it.  They rarely have communication with the outside world and the only communication they have is their phone that is shared in the family. They visit the cities only for rare occasions.  When we got out of the cities the roads are replaced with gravel and dirt paths and results in bumpy rides. The entire car ride we were bouncing around in the car because the bumpy paths caused the car to shake. We finally got to the students houses and we went to their houses, we sat down and Kevin will be outside but I sat down inside as Kevin’s dad asked the students questions. “Do you have any siblings?” He asked

“Yes I have a brother working” The student answered him

“How much income do your family get?”

“About 200 yuan a month”

I sat on a stool and I had my notebook out and I took notes about the answers that the students gave. We stayed there for a whole before Kevin’s dad finally said “ok we need to be going now” and then we left for the next house.

After the first two days we went to the school that is built by the donations. For me this was a very interesting experience because I have already came to this school before and I was really excited to see the changed and the new constructions funded by people’s donations.

The next morning we woke up early and we went straight to the car for the ride up to tianzege elementary. We drove out of the city and we continued down the dirt paths up the mountain.

“Which one did you think we should donate to?” Kevin’s dad asked

“I think we should donate to the last one.” I said

“I think so too because this money would make the biggest difference to them.”

After that conversation we drove for a long time on dirt paths. Sometimes we passed some houses or a small village. After a while the car stopped at a small village and past that village the roads were muddy paths.

When we got off the car we waited for a bit and the adults were talking to some people later Kevin’s dad came over and said “where hiking up.”

“Why can’t we just take the car up?” I asked

“Well this time the driver doesn’t want to take us up.”

“We took the car up last time and it was fine.”

“He said the path was wet from the rain and that cars cannot drive in the muddy paths.”

Then we started to hike up the mountain, for the first few hours we had to hike through mountains and mud paths, many times we had to follow a steam to get to another path. After the hike we had to scale a few mountains until we can see the school. Before we had a person who lived near the village deliver the food up there on his motorcycle and he left first, all the way up we found these radishes that were on the road. Each time we passed one Kevin’s dad will pick up one and he put it in my bag. After picking up the first one and he stuffed it in my bag. There were about 4 radishes on the road and after about 5 more minutes of walking the person on the motorcycle came back. “I dropped some radishes on the way up and I’m coming back to look for it,” then we answered “we found it.”

Two years ago when I first went there the school was only a cement building and a small yard, now two years later the school has a new yard and new buildings and a proper cafeteria. The school now has better conditions and education for the students. The school had much more improvements and it became much more impressive than the last time we visited.

After we got to the school Kevin and I walked around the school and then we noticed the changes and improvements that the school have made. We looked around and noticed that there were new classrooms being built, new buildings and classrooms that were being constructed.

After a few hours Kevin’s dad came over and said “we need to go now.”. We took the same path down and on the way we talked about the improvements to the school. The path was still wet muddy and many times we had to walk in or beside streams to get to the place that we needed to. “Why so we need to go soon” I asked.two After the hike there was another 2 hours of car ride in order to get to the city and the train station where we needed to take a train for 6 hours and then a plane for another 1 hour, the same long trip we had to make to the school.

Most people spent their vacations at home enjoying but I went to do some donation programs and I think that this was a more effective use of my vacation. Even though it may not be as fun I think I made a larger accomplishment than what I would have done at home and at home I would have probably just have been playing games all holiday.
